Magnetic Door Stop

What is a magnetic door stop?

When you’re moving things around, carrying things in your hand, cleaning, or even on a particularly windy day, you might want to not just open but also keep your door open. In this instance, you’ll really just want to push the door open and leave it open.

A magnetic door stop is a magnetic assembly that is used to prop doors open or keep them from opening too far. It could be a single structure with a magnet connected in some cases. For some, the magnetic door stop is made up of two parts: one that holds the magnet (and is installed on the wall or floor), and the other that is attached to the door (receptor).

The wall next to the door and the door itself benefits greatly from the use of door stops. If the door constantly knocks against the wall, both will deteriorate with time. As a result, you may need to repaint, change the door, or do some major remodelling overtime. This can be avoided by using a magnetic door stop.

Although there are other standard door stops like rubber or wooden wedges, magnetic door stops have the added benefit of being able to hold a door open without making noise.

What are the types of door stops?

Primarily, there are two types of door stops. You can use any of them but there are specific advantages of using each one.

  1. Wall-mounted door stop
  2. Floor-mounted door stop

Wall mounted door stops are mounted on the wall, whilst floor mounted door stops are installed on the ground.

If floor-mounted stops are installed incorrectly, they may cause frequent trips. They are, however, a great option if you don’t have a nearby wall to connect them to and like the door stop to remain hidden.

If you have a nearby wall, wall mounted door stops are ideal. They don’t restrict mobility in any way. Because they are so noticeable, you should be cautious while selecting a design.

The material that encases the magnet also divides magnetic door stops into three categories: wood, plastic, and metal.

The wooden and plastic ones are more appealing aesthically than the metal ones. And the metal ones cost more upfront. However, the metal ones last longer and save you from spending extra money in the long run to change them.

How do you install a door stop?

Most magnetic door stops are easy to install.

First of all, you’ll have to attach the catch to the door, while the receptor piece will be attached to the floor or wall.

Installing the Catch

Step 1

Seperate the mounting plate from the catch. You can do this by inserting a screwdriver between beneath the catch and rotate it clockwise while gripping the catch section.

Step 2

Place the mounting plate at bottom portion of the door, directly opposite the wall.

Step 3

Use a pencil to mark the holes for the screws. Drill the holes ant attach the mounting plate to the door, using screws.

Step 4

Reassemble the catch body with the mounting plate

Mounting the Door Stop

Step 1

Separate the mounting plate from the door stop as you did with the catch.

Step 2

Place the mounting plate on the door (wall-mounted magnetic door stop) or floor (floor-mounted magnetic door stop). Ensure that it aligns with the catch you’ve already installed on the door. Mark the screw holes with a pencil and drill through the holes.

Step 3

Affix the mounting plate to the wall with screws, through the drill holes you made earlier.

Step 5

Reassemble the body with the mounting plate.

After you’re done, try them out to make sure they allign with each other.
