Salvage Magnets

What are salvage magnets?

You’ll agree with me that if a thorough search is made in several water bodies, the treasures that one may find would be outstanding.

All you have to do is get a tool to attract ferromagnetic objects. And you’ll have a bag full of treasures.

It sounds great right?

But, which tool can you use?

The answer is simple: salvage magnets.

Salvage magnets are simply magnets that are used for salvaging discarded or lost ferromagnetic objects from water bodies.

These ferromagnetic objects could be bicycle frames, coins, guns, bombs, safes, and other valuable items.

People who engage in salvaging such objects are known as magnet fishers. They do so, to get valuable items that may have been forgotten.

Another reason is for ecological purposes. ecological purposes. These metal objects contaminate water bodies and can portend grave consequences for aquatic life.

How do salvage magnets work?

Salvage magnets are mostly circular, with a magnet immersed within. They are encased in a ‘pot’ coated with stainless steel or by a triage of nickel-copper-nickel. This coating prevents corrosion and loss of magnetism by the magnet.

Unlike traditional bar magnets, the magnetic field is concentrated within the pot. Hence, these magnets are far stronger than normal magnets of the same size, type, and weight. They are able to hold a weight that even traditional magnets of comparable size, weight, and type, cannot carry.

How can I know quality salvage magnets?

There are key indicators that determine quality salvage magnets. If you find a quality magnet that ticks these boxes, you’ve got yourself a winner.

These tips are:

  1. A salvage magnet with neodymium is the strongest. Hence, you should go for a salvage magnet with neodymium especially if you’ll be working with ferromagnetic items that weigh massively.

Ferrite and mounting magnets can also be used. However, you must first decide on the weight of the items you’ll be salvaging because there’s a limit to the weight these magnets can handle.

  1. Check the technical specifications for the pull strength. The pull strength means the maximum weight a magnet can handle.

It’s best to go for a pull strength of at least 400 pounds. Any pull strength below this is unacceptable.

  1. The quality of the coating is important. A salvage magnet with a poor or incomplete coating will corrode in the long run. As it corrodes, the magnetic strength also diminishes.

A triple coating of nickel-copper-nickel or an A3 graded stainless steel is sufficient.

  1. Aim for a minimum magnetic strength of N42
