Plastic Coated Magnets

What Are Plastic Coated Magnets?

Plastic coated magnets are permanent magnets that are surrounded by two main layers: a layer of metal, and a layer of plastic.

The core of these magnets are typically made of neodymium or ferrite magnets, while the surrounding layer of metal is typically made of nickel.

The outer layer of plastic is typically made of epoxy or acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) material.
Because of the plastic coating, these magnets are waterproof, rust-proof, scratch-proof, non-slip, and often colorful. They are also safe to use in saltwater and humid air without the risk of corrosion.

How Do Plastic Coated Magnets Work?

Plastic coated magnets generate strong magnetic fields that surround them from all angles due to their neodymium or ferrite magnetic cores. This means that all sides of the magnet can be used.

The surrounding layer of metal strengthens the magnetic field even more.

However, the layer of plastic acts as a slight barrier to the magnetic field. The thicker the plastic coating, the more the magnetic field is disrupted and weakened.

As a result, plastic coated magnets either have to be larger, or have to have a stronger magnetic core to be as powerful as uncoated magnets.

What Are the Uses of Plastic Coated Magnets?

Plastic coated magnets come in many forms, including board magnets, magnetic markers, fridge magnets, planning magnets, display magnets, and magnetic children’s toys.

Board Magnets

Plastic coated board magnets are commonly used to pin something to a board.

They can attach to whiteboards, porcelain boards, and notice boards.

Magnetic Markers

Magnetic markers come with plastic coated magnets that allow you to clip it to a board.

But if your marker doesn’t come with a magnet, you can easily take a plastic coated magnet and glue it onto the marker of your choosing.

Fridge Magnets

Fridge magnets use their plastic covering to display beautiful designs.

These can help personalize your fridge, or simply pin something up.

Planning Magnets

Planning magnets are special plastic covered magnets that you can treat like mini whiteboards.

You can simply stick them onto a magnetic surface, write on them with a whiteboard marker, and use them to plan out your tasks.

Display Magnets

Display magnets are plastic covered magnets that you can use to prop up objects you want to display.

They often take the form of magnetic bulletin boards.

Magnetic Children’s Toys

Several children’s toys are actually plastic covered magnets.

They can take the form of magnetic building blocks, gears, or puzzles.
