Ring magnets

Ring magnets

Magnets come in different shapes and sizes.

There are the traditional magnets shaped like a bar, a horseshoe, a cylinder, and a ring. But I’ll tell you more about ring magnets.

So let’s get started by answering this question…

What are ring magnets?

These are flat, circular, or cylindrical magnets, with a hole featuring at the centre. They come in different diameters. The diameter is always higher than the thickness.

To protect them from rust, they are often coated with nickel.

They are made of different types of magnets such as ferrite, samarium cobalt, neodymium, and many more.

Neodymium ring magnets

Just as the name implies, these are ring magnets made from a rare-earth material: neodymium.

Ring magnets made with neodymium – which happens to be the strongest rare earth magnet – are the strongest, have higher coercivity, and remanence. This means that they emit a stronger magnetic pull force.

But special care must be applied, when handling neodymium ring magnets. They can chip or break easily if they fall and their magnetic properties can be affected by exposure to high temperatures.

What are the types of ring magnets?

There are various types of ring magnets.

Based on the direction of magnetism, there are three types of ring magnets. They include:

  • Axial ring magnets
  • Radial ring magnet
  • Diametrical ring magnet

A predominant number of ring magnets are axial ring magnets which means that they are axially magnetised.

What are the applications of ring magnets?

The most common usage of ring magnets is in a science classroom where it’s used to give a practical depiction of the forces of attraction and repulsion.

Other applications include:

  • Compasses
  • Door bells
  • Refrigerators
  • Microphones
  • Computers
  • Dynamos
  • Loudspeakers
  • Transducers and many more.

With that being said, the big question might be…
