Welding magnets

Welding magnets

Welding can be a hard endeavour.

It’s even harder, when the ferrous tube or pipe or sheet, keeps moving sideways when welding. Although you can use your hands to hold it in position, it’s sometimes insufficient. And this can have a negative effect on the accuracy and precision of the welding.

So what’s the solution?

Welding magnets!

Welding magnets are an important feature in the toolbox of every welder.

What are welding magnets?

Welding magnets are super strong magnets (could be neodymium, alnico, ferrite, or samarium cobalt) encased in metallic sheets, which usually cover the magnet and extend by a few meters outwards. They are used to hold ferromagnetic welds, in place.

They usually look like welding squares or welding clamps. Hence, another name for them is magnetic squares or magnetic clamps.

Welding magnets offer stability for welding metals at angles 45, 90, and 135.

The magnetic pull force of these magnets is defined based on the pulling force on the longer portion of the magnet, and it differs. There are welding magnets with pull forces of 25, 50, and 75 pounds. The high duty welding magnets pull more than this.

In addition, the magnetism of some welding magnets can be turned on and off, through a switch. This enables one to pack them in a toolbox without magnetising other tools. And it aids the removal of any magnetic chip that may have stuck to the magnet when welding.

How to use welding magnets

Welding magnets are quite easy to use: decide on the angle you want to weld at, fix the magnet, tack it, and weld.

But there’s an important thing to take note of: the magnetic clamp/square must be removed after tacking because they are very sensitive to exposure to high temperatures. Exposure to high temperatures can affect their magnetic pull force.

What are the types of welding magnets?

There are diverse types of welding magnets. Before deciding the type to buy, you must decide on the angle you want to weld at, the pulling force you’ll need, and the extent of versatility you’ll require.

The types include:

  • Multi-angle welding magnets
  • Adjustable welding magnets
  • Arrow welding magnets
  • Snake magnets
  • Magnetic welding clamps
  • Adjustable angle V-pads
  • Switch-controlled welding magnets
